Advancing the prevention of Melanoma through advocacy and education

The Melanoma Network of Canada, founded in 2009 by a patient and three-time survivor of melanoma, Annette Cyr, is on a mission to:

  • Increase Canadians' awareness of melanoma, a potentially life-threatening skin cancer, and its prevention through education, advocacy and research
  • Support melanoma patients, caregivers and medical professionals through current and coordinated information and services
  • Create a national network advocating for additional treatment options and a united voice for patients with melanoma

I was 36 years old and 32 weeks pregnant when I was diagnosed with melanoma. There is never a good time to be diagnosed with cancer, but facing my own mortality and getting ready to welcome a new life brought my world crashing down. Melanoma is one of very few cancers that can actually be passed to the baby. We were so grateful when we found out it did not. I was discharged from the Cancer Program in 2017 and now see a dermatologist every six months. I still struggle with the worry of recurrence and fear of the unknown. I try and live my life now with gratitude and compassion. The best advice given to me was by another participant at a patient support group; she told me “Be inspired by your own story”, so that’s what I will continue to do.
